2017 - Share the Road

Berkeley Lab’s Safety Culture Work Group is sponsoring a contest focused on roadway safety with the theme “SHARE THE ROAD.” All qualifying entries will be displayed at the Safety, Security and Sustainability Fair on April 27, 2017 and the 11th Annual JGI Safety and Wellness Fair on May 17, 2017. The winning image will be incorporated into a new poster with full credit given to the winner, who will receive a $100 award.

The Winner Is...

Wendy Avalos of the Workstation Support group. Her illustration, which pictures the many unpredictable road users at Berkeley Lab, was selected by employee voters as the winner of the $100 prize. Wendy enjoyed enhancing her of the lab from building 65 and juxtaposed everything she has seen around the lab while driving on her motorcycle and using the shuttle - Turkeys, cyclists and more! She hopes that other commuters will watch out for her while she is looking out for others.

2014 - All Eyes on Safety

Berkeley Lab’s Safety Culture Work Group is sponsoring a contest focused on roadway safety with the theme “SHARE THE ROAD.” All qualifying entries will be displayed at the Safety, Security and Sustainability Fair on April 27, 2017 and the 11th Annual JGI Safety and Wellness Fair on May 17, 2017. The winning image will be incorporated into a new poster with full credit given to the winner, who will receive a $100 award.

Winner is…..

Avid photographer and Earth Sciences Division Staff Scientist John Christensen was voted by the Berkeley Lab community as the winner of the photo contest that ended May 15. The photo that garnered him a $100 cash prize was taken near Building 90 while on one of his daily walks last November.

When the “All Eyes on Safety” contest came up John put that quirky image to good use by adding a caption that nailed the single most important safety message for pedestrians: use designated walkways. The other two top things to remember, according to Berkeley Lab’s safety experts, are to wear footwear appropriate to the terrain and to pay close attention to where you are going considering the Lab’s topography, aging infrastructure, and ongoing construction activity.

Berkeley Lab Deputy Director and photo contest sponsor Horst Simon would like to thank all contest participants and remind the community that “The Lab’s safety culture is robust, but safety is something we have to keep our eyes on every single day.”

If you have a question or concern regarding any safety issue, Berkeley Lab’s management and safety experts are “all ears.” For more information, see:

Video Contest - Whoopsie Doodles A Winner

What do a melting witch, a rapping scientist, and a bumbling chemist have in common? More than you’d think. All were examples of lab protocol gone abysmally wrong in the Second Annual Safety Video Contest, which concluded with a formal awards presentation on July 27.

Tevye Kuykendall of Material Sciences played the lackadaisical Carl in the winning video and received $200 when Lab employees voted his video first place. Carl’s catchphrase, “whoopsie doodles,” was uttered each time his foibles jeopardized the safety of others. You can watch that video below.

The videos in this year’s contest emphasized the need for health and safety awareness, like Nick Bojda and John Romankiewicz’s second-place video, Ergonomics Rap with Sustainable John, featuring rapper Sustainable John, who extolled the virtues of ergonomics in rhyming verse.

Third-place winner Man’s Best Friend, by Massie Ballon of Genomics, enlisted the help of pooches Rudy, Moose, Phoenix, and Bob to demonstrate that while it would be ideal to rely on man’s best friend as a faithful task partner, it’s up to fellow colleagues to watch out for each other.

2010 - All Eyes on Safety

The EHS Communications committee sponsored a lab wide safety video contest that ended in May 2011. The contest was open to individuals and teams. The goal was to create a short video that addressed one or more safety, health, or environmental issues relevant to LBNL, either in the workplace or at home.

The winners of this contest were announced on Friday July 22nd by Jim Krupnick and Doug Fleming.

  • 1st Place: Dave Drives to Work (Dave and Miles Watson)

  • 2nd Place: Surviving LBNL (A Team from EETD)

  • 3rd Place: Integrated Safet Management at LBNL (Raffaello Secondo, Vammsi Vylta)
